How to Break In & Care for a Bite Suit

Being a K9 bite decoy is a process. You have to learn how to read, work, and catch a dog. Once you have developed the dog's bite from rags, to pillows, to sleeves, you are ready to move on to a full bite suit. Now there are a lot of great suits out there; whether you pick a Semi-Comp Suit or a Police Suit, you have to break it in and store it correctly for a lifetime of use!

The Break-In Process:

Because the suits are made on a flat surface, yet our arms, legs and torso are round, it may take some time to really form fit to your body. Realizing this, when I bought my very first bite suit, it wasn't a shock that it was far stiffer than the one I had been using. However, it was flexible enough to allow me to stretch around in it, which helped with the initial breaking in (just wearing and moving around, tumbling, etc.) There are many ways to help "soften" the suit, but in the end, the best way is to take bites from a dog, in all areas of the suit.

(There are a couple old school things people say like run it over a couple times with a car. Though I don’t suggest it, that’s totally up to you!)

Caring For Your Bite Suit:

Storing your suit in-between uses is important. If you sweat like the Gorilla of man-beast (Mike Jones), storing your suit is even more important. Or, if you have a slobbery dog on the bite, it's also important to care for it post-bite work.

The best we've found is to lightly spray down the section or sections that may be extra grimy and then hang dry it on a clothesline or tree branch (not in a closet). As for the interior, we recommend opening it as best you can, allowing the sweat to dry naturally. If you can't hang dry it because you are traveling, we've heard of people throwing a dry towel inside damp areas and placing the suit in a suit bag, where the opened areas of the suit are not completely covered. The Ray Allen Suit Bag allows air to flow through the bag, helping to prevent mildew or odors. Whatever you do, make sure to keep the suit open as often as possible, when not in use, and particularly within the first few hours of removing it for the day.

Breaking in the suit is a process, but it should also be fun. Caring for and storing it properly is just a matter of not being lazy. Our bite suits are expensive pieces of equipment that are built to last a lifetime. Nobody wants to go through buying and breaking in a suit every year!

Please note: what works for us in the dry climate of Colorado may not work as well for those of you in Texas or Florida.
