CLEANSING THE TEMPLE!
(Mark 11:15-19)
Intro: A good definition of clutter: “to fill something in an untidy or badly organized way.” Could that not rightly include things placed which are actually contrary to the purpose of that space?
I. SOLOMON’S TEMPLE!
A. The Place!
1. Built In Jerusalem.
2. Mt. Moriah. [2 Chron. 3:1; 1 Chron. 21:14-29]
B. The Purpose!
1. As a house for God though it could not contain Him. [1 Kings 8:27]
2. Yet still represented His presence with Israel. [1 Kings 8:29]
a. Priests ministering before the Lord.
b. The mercy seat in the Most Holy Place.
c. The place to be prayed toward. [1 Kings 8:44, 48; Dan. 6:10]
3. After the ark was put in place God’s glory filled the house. [1 Kings 8:10-11]
II. AT TIME OF NEHEMIAH!
A. The Place!
1. Still in Jerusalem.
2. Rebuilt under direction of Ezra.
B. The Purpose!
1. Nehemiah supported the renewal of worship.
2. But had some cleansing to do. (Neh. 13:4-9)
III. THE TEMPLE AT TIME OF JESUS!
A. The Place!
1. Still Jerusalem.
2. Though had been plundered and restored several times.
B. The Purpose!
1. Jesus’ family went there each Passover. [Luke 2:41]
2. A place for questions and learning. [Luke 2:46-47]
3. And He noted it as His Father’s. [Luke 2:49]
C. How Jesus Found It! (Mark 11:15-19)
1. Jesus restored it; at least temporarily.
2. Jesus would foretell this structure’s ultimate destruction. [Mark 13:1-2]
IV. ARE WE DULY MINDFUL OF THE TEMPLE?
A. What It Is!
1. 1 Cor. 3:16-17
2. 1 Cor. 6:12-19-20
B. What Have We Made Of His Place?
1. Individually?
a. Paul noted some things which would hinder inheriting the
kingdom. [1 Cor. 6:9-10; Gal. 5:16-21; Eph. 5:3-12]
b. From such can be cleansed. (1 Cor. 6:11)
c. Rather to produce fruit of the Spirit. (Gal. 5:22-24)
2. Collectively?
a. Not in the church: divisiveness [Rom. 16:17; 1 Cor. 1:10; Tit. 3:10], arrogance [1 Cor. 5:2; 1 Cor. 13:4], resentment [1 Cor. 13:5], etc.
b. But rather: unity [Rom. 12:15; Eph. 4:3; 1 Pet. 3:8], encouragement [1 Thess. 5:11; Heb. 10:24-25], gracious [Col. 4:6], kind, tenderhearted, forgiving as have been forgiven [Eph. 4:32], etc.
Closing: Let Us Duly Consider Our Life In It’s House Connection!
(2 Tim. 2:20-21)
