Royal Hospital School Grand Organ | Through Time (Cantabile No. 22) — Rien Schalkwijk

Описание: Today I’m exploring a brand-new organ sample set from the Royal Hospital School in Holbrook, UK — featuring the magnificent 1933 Hill, Norman & Beard pipe organ. I first heard this instrument this morning when my friend Markus Dreja played my piece Aurora Borealis on it — and I was immediately struck by something special: not the power, but the intimacy.

While many sample sets excel at grand tutti and cathedral-scale climaxes, I’m always searching for the smaller voices — gentle registrations, warm foundations, and expressive string colors. This organ has them on every division.

Especially beautiful are the string ensembles, which reminded me strongly of the legendary Steinmeyer organ from Landau — rich, breathing, orchestral textures that invite cantabile playing.

Inspired by these colors, I performed my own composition:

🎼 Through Time — Cantabile No. 22, Op. 44
in a free, improvisatory spirit, letting the instrument guide the phrasing and pacing.

This recording is not about brilliance or volume — it’s about subtle movement, inner resonance, and the quiet emotional space where music truly lives.
