"Little Sadie" is a 20th-century American traditional folk ballad. It is also known under under various others names. It tells the story of a man who is arrested in Jericho, South Carolina, after shooting a woman (- a "feminicide" in today's words) and is then sentenced by a judge.
Early recording by Clarence Ashley, was released in 1930, and later covered by Tom Ashley and Doc Watson in "Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley's" (1962).

At the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, Bill Keith played with Jim Rooney a first instrumental version of Little Sadie, recorded live and released on the album: "Folk Music At Newport", (Vanguard-770072).

A more elaborate version of this preliminary instrumental version includes a “baroque” exploration of Jesse McReynolds' cross-picking mandolin style by David Grisman. It was recorded live in 1966, with Bill Keith on banjo and Artie Rose on guitar, and released in 1980 on "Early Dawg", for Sugar Hill Records (SH 3713).

In 1969, (this video) The "Blue Velvet Band" album (Sweet Moments with The Blue Velvet Band, Seven Arts Records WS 1802) includes this song sings by Jim Rooney, with Eric Weissberg on guitar, Richard Greene on fiddle and Bill Keith on banjo.
Other notable covers include Bob Dylan's version on “Self Portrait” (1970).
During their 1977 European tour, the Centennial Bluegrass Band (featuring Bill Keith, David Grisman, Tony Rice, Darol Anger, and Bill Amatneek) performed Keith's adaptation of this song, sung by Tony Rice.

Just after this European Tour Tony Rice recorded this song for the Tony Rice Unit's first album: “Mazanita” (released in 1979 by Rounder Records: 0092), with a different arrangement: without banjo, but with Sam Bush both on the mandolin & fiddle.

In 2011, the Deluxe Edition, 10th Anniversary of the broadcast album of the popular movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?", includes some Unreleased Tracks from the first edition (2000), including a picking version of Little Sadie by Norman Blake (CD2-10)
