This is my take on this old-time classic. There are many versions of this song, and also different lyrics, with most focusing on a failed buffalo hunting trip or a cattle run. The song is heavily rooted in the oral tradition rather than a single author, thus the vartiations. Given that, I created my own lyrics, building off the essence or structure of the song. My narrative is about the failure to find the treasure hoped for by the old Mexican cowboy.
