The psalm contrasts two ways of life: those who pursue vanity and falsehood, and those who know that the Lord has set apart His Holy One. It calls the faithful to self-examination, repentance, and inward stillness—“Be angry, and do not sin”—inviting us to turn the heart back to God before resting for the night.

True joy, the psalm teaches, does not come from abundance or material prosperity, but from the light of God’s countenance. The gladness placed in the heart by the Lord surpasses all earthly gain.

In the Orthodox tradition, Psalm 4 is prayed at night, teaching us to lay down in peace, entrusting our lives entirely to God, who alone causes us to dwell in hope.
