There are moments when the ordinary hides the unthinkable—when routine unfolds as it always has, smooth and uneventful, until it doesn’t. As the sun dipped below the horizon on the North Shore of Oahu, the evening offered no hint of what was to come. A skydiving flight, one of many, was just beginning. The plane was ready. By that afternoon, he had already completed three successful jump runs and was preparing for a fourth—the popular “sunset jump.”
