In this study, we examine Genesis 35:5–36:43 — a section that closes Jacob’s journey and records the descendants of Esau.
In this passage we see:
• God protecting Jacob’s household as they return to Bethel
• The Lord reaffirming Jacob’s name: Israel
• The covenant promise repeated
• Rachel’s death in childbirth
• Isaac’s death and burial
• The genealogy of Esau (Edom)
• The kings of Edom before Israel had a king
Genesis 35 marks a reaffirmation of covenant identity. Jacob is now firmly established as Israel. The promise continues through his line.
Genesis 36 records the line of Esau, showing that God’s word to Rebekah about two nations is unfolding. Even outside the covenant line, God’s purposes are being worked out in history.
This section reminds us that God oversees generations — blessing, establishing, and recording His work across time.
As always, I encourage you to:
• Read the passage carefully for yourself
• Compare Scripture with Scripture
• Seek understanding directly from God’s Word
These studies walk through the text verse by verse. They are not a substitute for your own reading, prayer, and discernment. The authority is Scripture — not the opinions of any teacher.
