With her hand drawn to her heart, the sitter embodies the tender romanticism that fascinated later collectors. This captivating work is thought to be Venetia Stanley, celebrated beauty and later wife of Sir Kenelm Digby. Digby adored her, and was heartbroken by her early death in 1633, commemorating her in portraits, poems and sculpture. This miniature relates closely to other likenesses of Venetia and reflects the enduring fascination her story inspired. Its distinguished provenance, from Horace Walpole to J. P. Morgan, testifies to its long-held allure.
Now on view in our exhibition Miniatures from the Bearsted Collection, until 19th November 2025.
