(12 Sep 2018) White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow sounded a positive note Wednesday when asked by reporters about ongoing trade talks with both China and Canada.
Speaking outside at the White House's West Wing, Kudlow reiterated that communication between the United States and China was continuing, although he did later allow, "communication has picked up a notch."
The Trump administration is expected to announce a decision shortly on whether to go ahead with 25 percent tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports in a dispute over Beijing's technology policy.
The two sides already have raised duties on $50 billion of each other's goods.
Trump said last Friday that he was considering extending penalties to extending penalties to nearly all Chinese imports to the United States by raising duties on an additional $267 billion of goods.
Kudlow also said talks between the US Trade officials and Canada were "continuing,"
"We are working on it today, as we speak," he said.
Canada and the United States have held high-level on the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland is expected back in Washington Thursday to continue discussions.
Kudlow repeated earlier comments that U.S. access to Canada's protected dairy market is the single biggest issue holding up the negotiations between the two countries.
In response to reporter questions, Kudlow did not rule out reaching agreements on trade with the United Kingdom and Japan.
