STORYLINE:
Dozens of Iraqis demonstrated in Baghdad on Monday to show support for Mojtaba Khamenei, a son of Iran’s late supreme leader, who has been named as the Islamic Republic’s next ruler.

Protesters held posters of late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, carried Iranian flags and chanted anti-U.S. and anti- Israel slogans.

A dozen security members surrounded the gathering and prevented attendees from crossing into the fortified Green Zone area where the US embassy is located.

Mojtaba Khamenei had long been considered a contender, even before an Israeli strike killed his father at the start of the war, and despite never being elected or appointed to a government position.

Iran’s powerful paramilitary Revolutionary Guard answers to the supreme leader, and the younger Khamenei will have the central say in war strategy.
