Описание: The food habits of Keralites in the olden times were based on the Ayurvedic system. There are many do’s and don’ts in the Ayurvedic eating method. Some foods are avoided during certain seasons. Some foods are known to generate heat. Such foods are avoided during summer. Horse gram is one such food. It generates heat. As a result, it is ideally suited for the chilly weather like the monsoon. As it is the monsoon time, let us prepare a stew with horse gram. My mother, Srimati Padmini Antarjanam, an expert in traditional cooking, will show you the preparation of a delicious stew with horse gram.
Horse gram has many health benefits as well. It is used to treat fertility problems in women. A concoction made with raw horse gram and some herbs is given to women suffering from the problem of irregular periods. But Ayurveda says that horse gram should not be given to people suffering from urinary stones, pregnant women etc.
Nowadays it is difficult to follow the Ayurvedic lifestyle. Ayurveda stresses on consuming local and seasonal foods. Now most of the traditional foods have disappeared from our tables due to the lack of availability of ingredients. People are after convenient and artificially flavoured packaged food. Nobody has the time or the patience to grow their own food. Many people have moved into apartments and hence there is a space constraint in growing vegetables. People are compromising their health for convenience. Through this channel, we want to show the preparation traditional recipes, some of which are easy to prepare. We also aim to educate you about the benefits of traditional food. We hope that everyone will switch to healthy food habits by watching this channel.

HORSE GRAM-MASHED AND STEWED

SUMMARY:

INGREDIENTS:

Horse gram: 200 grams
Grated coconut: 1 cup
Cumin seeds: 2 Teaspoon
Coconut oil: 4 spoonsful.
Red chillies: 4(1 for cooking,2 for grinding and 1 for seasoning).
Salt: as required
Curry leaves: a few sprigs.
Mustard seeds: 2 spoonsful

METHOD:

Dry roast the horse gram till golden brown. Pressure cook it in 3 or 4 cups of water for 4 or 5 whistles. Add a red chilli and some cumin seeds and 1 teaspoonful coconut oil while pressure cooking. Allow it to cool. Grind together the coconut ,2 dry roasted red chillies and the pressure-cooked horse gram. Grind it to smooth paste. Add this paste to the water boiling in the stone pot. Mix well using a ladle. Add the required amount of salt. When it begins to boil, add a few sprigs of fresh curry leaves. Also add a spoonsful coconut oil. Turn off the stove. Allow it to cook in the hot stone pot. Prepare the tempering by heating about 1 spoonsful of coconut oil in a tempering pan and adding the mustard seeds. When it splutters add a cut red chilli and some curry leaves. Pour the seasoning to the curry.

This Curry can be consumed with Rice(Indian meal), Idly,Dosa, Chappathi,Idiyappam etc.
