my 3rd attempt at a history of RAF Burn....
In mid-September 1940 land at Burn, just 2 south of Selby in Yorkshire, was requisitioned to build a satellite airfield for RAF Snaith as part of the expansion of No.4 Group Bomber Command
RAF Burn opened as an operational bomber station in No.4 Group on 1st Sepember 1942 first hosting No. 431 RCAF Sqn, then No 578 Squadron for the rest of the war
the airfield was permanently closed on the 15th of January 1946
The Wheatsheaf - on the A19 and very close to the airfield, and opposite the Memorial Garden is said to be haunted by an Airman
