This little known airfield is situated 5 miles south of the city of York between the villages of Acaster Selby and Acaster Malbis, the latter giving it its name. However, the chosen location, close to the west bank of the River Ouse, soon proved to be a complete mistake and Acaster Malbis was found to be unsuitable for flying due to the frequent mists from the river.
The airfield was declared open in January 1942 as a part of No. 12 Group and as a satellite for RAF Church Fenton. It was assigned the Pundit Code of AM. It was soon found unsuitable and was passed to Training Command only to again be found unsuitable it was passed to Bomber Command and finally to Maintenance Command
