How to use music and sound design in movie trailers

In this video we will be dissecting the rhythm of the trailer, and the sound and music components that go with it. We will be also looking at the visual style of trailers as well.

I will be focusing on four film trailers that were great at executing these steps, including Mad Max: Fury Road, The Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo (2011), Inherent Vice, The Neon Demon.

Every film genre has its own conventions and rules to abide to and great trailers usually follow these rules, while sometimes bending the rules to create a maximum impact. The pacing and rhythm of a trailer is set up to excite audiences and persuade them to see a film. Trailers in certain genres heavily rely on a certain rhythm in editing, whether it is rapid cutting for Action or slow build up in momentum with drama, or lingering shots in Horror.
