As you probably know, the FFIEC has recently completed their Cybersecurity Assessment where they evaluated more than 500 community financial institutions to determine how prepared they are to mitigate cyber risks; and the results are in. The findings reveal that the types of products and services offered and the technologies used have been found to vary greatly across financial institutions resulting in significantly different inherent risks relating to cybersecurity.

Additionally, financial institutions have historically been dependent on IT to conduct business operations. Since each type of technology introduces complexity and potential vulnerabilities, the FFIEC expects senior management and board of directors to concern themselves to the point of moving cybersecurity from the computer room to the board room. It is imperative that senior management and board of directors not only understand, but manage gaps before cyber attacks occur.
