The FFIEC Cybersecurity Assessments Are Underway: Are You Prepared?

The FFIEC has released more IT & Information Security advisory letters and new guidance in the past 18 months than any other similar period of time in history.

The new FFIEC Cybersecurity Assessment pilot program demonstrates how serious the threats have become.

Various advisories and guidance include:
• The new Cybersecurity Assessment Program
• Risks associated with cyber attacks ATMs
• DDoS attacks on public-facing institution websites
• The recent FFIEC Social Media Guidance
• Microsoft’s discontinuation of support for its Windows XP

In June 2013, the FFIEC announced the creation of the Cybersecurity and Critical Infrastructure Working Group to enhance communication among the FFIEC member agencies.

The pilot program at more than 500 community institutions is to be conducted by state and federal regulators, which will be completed during regularly scheduled examinations. Regulators are particularly focusing on risk management and oversight, threat intelligence and collaboration, cybersecurity controls, service provider and vendor risk management, and cyber incident management and resilience. Another aim of the pilot is to help regulators make risk-informed decisions to enhance the effectiveness of supervisory programs, guidance, and examiner training.
