What to plant in January ?
1. Repeat winter veggies: like spinach, fenugreek, coriander, mizuna, kale, lettuce, swiss chard. Sow seeds around mid-January.
2. Beetroot can be grown from seeds. Again, don’t sow seeds if it’s too cold, sow them post lohri.
3. Get flowering plants like Dahlia, Dianthus, Petunia, Salvia, Geranium, Pansy etc. from any local nursery. These shall flower till March/April.
4. Alstromerias (peruvian lillies) can be grown from rhizomes. Asiatic lilly plants can also be bought from local nuseries.
5. You can also grow succulents like kalanchoe etc. Get these plants from any local nursery. Remember to give them extremely well draining soil, and full sunlight.
6. Summer Vegetables: sow seeds of veggies like zucchini, bottle gourd, brinjal, beans, amaranth, cucumber, long cucumber or tar, okra or bhindi, corn, baby corn, squash towards the end of January when the weather starts getting a little warmer.
7. Flowers like zinnias, sunflowers, vinca, summer cosmos can be grown from seeds. Sow seeds at the end of January.
8. Seeds of fruits like melon and watermelon can also be sown, in late January.
*** In case you’re planning to sow summer seeds
early, protect them from cold/fog.
