Bolting in plants is the natural process of producing a tall flower stalk and going to seed, an acceleration of the life cycle that makes leafy and root vegetables bitter and unpalatable. It is primarily triggered by environmental stress or the plant's natural maturity.
The main reasons plants bolt include:
Temperature Changes: This is the most common trigger. Cool-season crops like lettuce, spinach, and broccoli often bolt when exposed to sudden or prolonged heat waves.
Any form of significant stress can cause a plant to rush to the reproductive phase as a survival mechanism. This includes:
Lack of water or inconsistent watering
Root disturbance (transplant shock) or being root-bound in a container that's too small.
Pest pressure.
Insufficient sunlight, causing the plant to stretch (become leggy) in search of light.
