🛕 Sarnath Temple
📍 Location & Introduction.
Sarnath is a small town about 10 km northeast of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Known as the place where Lord Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya (around 528 BCE). The sermon is called Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta (Turning the Wheel of Dharma).
Sarnath is one of the Four Great Buddhist Pilgrimage Sites:
1. Lumbini (Birthplace of Buddha, Nepal)
2. Bodh Gaya (Enlightenment, Bihar)
3. Sarnath (First Sermon, Uttar Pradesh)
4. Kushinagar (Mahaparinirvana, Uttar Pradesh)
🕉️ Spiritual Importance
After 6 years of meditation, Buddha attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. He then traveled to Sarnath to meet his five companions (the Pañcavaggiya monks) who had earlier abandoned him.
Here, he delivered his first teaching about the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. This marked the foundation of the Buddhist Sangha (monastic order). For Buddhists worldwide, Sarnath is as sacred as Jerusalem for Christians or Mecca for Muslims.
