Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the most sacred and famous Hindu temples, dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the spiritual city of Varanasi (Banaras/Kashi), Uttar Pradesh, India.

It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are the holiest Shiva temples spread across India.

The temple stands on the western bank of the holy river Ganga. Devotees believe that a single visit to Kashi Vishwanath can grant liberation (Moksha) from the cycle of life and death.

The temple has been mentioned in many ancient scriptures like the Skanda Purana. It has also been rebuilt and renovated several times in history due to invasions.

The present structure was constructed in 1780 by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. The temple is also known for its golden spire (Shikhara) and is sometimes called the Golden Temple of Varanasi.

Taking darshan at Kashi Vishwanath is considered equivalent to visiting all other Jyotirlingas.

According to belief, Lord Shiva himself whispers the Taraka Mantra in the ear of a dying soul in Kashi, granting them Moksha.

It is also closely linked with the Ganga Aarti performed every evening at Dashashwamedh Ghat.

Varanasi, one of the oldest living cities in the world (over 3,000 years old), is situated on the banks of the sacred Ganga River.
