How did HIV first enter the human population? In this episode, renowned Ugandan scientist David Serwadda explains the scientific evidence tracing the origins of Human Immunodeficiency Virus to a virus found in monkeys known as Simian Immunodeficiency Virus.
Professor Serwadda breaks down how the virus likely jumped from monkeys to humans through close contact such as hunting and handling bush meat in parts of Central Africa. Over time, the virus adapted in humans and evolved into HIV the virus that causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
