The Pokrovsky Stavropegic Convent at Pokrovskaya Zastava in Moscow was founded in 1635 by Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich. According to legend, the reason for the foundation of the monastery in honor of the Protection of the Mother of God was the death of the Tsar's parent, His Holiness Patriarch Philaret, who died on the feast of the Protection in 1633.

The monastery was called "Pokrov na ubogikh domakh". Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich granted 17 quarters of land for the construction of the monastery. Before that, here, on the outskirts of Moscow, there was a cemetery for the burial of the homeless, vagrants and the executed. The Pokrovskaya wooden church existed before the monastery was founded and was a parish church.
Later, by decree of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, the monastery was built "at the cost of its room and supplied with church utensils and other necessities."
In 1808, a stone monastery cathedral was built on the site of the dilapidated church (1655). The Church in honor of All Saints with a refectory chamber was built in 1792-98 on the site of the dilapidated church of 1682, in 1854-55 it was completely rebuilt (architect M.D. Bykovsky) and reconsecrated. In 1799, a three-tiered bell tower was built, the walls and gates in 1833-53. From 1680 to 1731, the monastery was assigned to the Zaikonospassky Monastery. In 1751-76. The Pokrovsky Monastery housed a theological seminary.
In 1812, the monastery was devastated. It took several years for the monastery to recover from the damage.
In the 19th-20th centuries, the monastery cemetery was the burial place of Moscow merchants.
By the beginning of the 20th century, the monastery had two churches - Pokrovsky and Voskresensky, four chapels in different parts of Moscow, a stone tent-roofed bell tower with eight bells and a striking clock. The monastery was surrounded by a stone fence; five quadrangular towers were located at the corners of the fence. Two almshouses were assigned to the monastery, and a parochial boarding school for boys operated.
In 1926, the bell tower was blown up, then the Pokrovsky Church was closed, the chapel and gravestones were demolished; in 1929, the Voskresensky Church was closed. On the site of the cemetery, there is a park of culture and recreation (Tagansky Park), which still exists today. Trusts, offices, banks, a gym, and a billiard room were located in the buildings of the churches and monastery buildings.
In 1994, the Holy Synod decided to renew the Pokrovsky Monastery as a women's monastic community.
In 1998, the honest remains of the righteous old woman Matrona were transferred from the Danilovskoye Cemetery in Moscow. In 1999, Blessed Matrona was glorified as a locally venerated saint of the Moscow diocese. In 2004, at the Holy Bishops' Council, Righteous Matrona was canonized as a general church saint.
