The Upper Temple is consecrated in honor of the Resurrection of Christ.
The Main Temple of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is the Patriarchal Cathedral in the name of the Resurrection of Christ, erected in the Military-Patriotic Park of Culture and Recreation "Patriot". Dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War and erected in honor of the military exploits of the Russian people in all wars.
The proportions of one of the most majestic and tallest temples in Russia, built for the first time from metal and glass, contain significant numbers and dates from history. Many of them are related to the numbers associated with the Great Patriotic War. The height of the temple together with the cross is 96 meters. In 960, the Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duke Vladimir was born, in whose honor the Lower Church was consecrated. The diameter of the drum of the main dome is 1945 centimeters. There are 8 windows on the drum. The diameter of the dome is 2243 centimeters. On May 8, 1945, at 22:43, the act of unconditional surrender of Germany was signed. The small domes reach a height of 1418 cm - that is how many days and nights the Great Patriotic War lasted. The height of the belfry is 75 meters, the anniversary of the Victory. The area of the mosaic in the interior is 2644 square meters, which corresponds to the number of full cavaliers of the Order of Glory. The Upper Church is dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ — the main Christian holiday of Easter — the affirmation of the eternal Victory of Christ over death, which opened for all believers the transition from temporary earthly life to Eternal Life with God, to which all soldiers who died for a just cause, for the defense of their Motherland on the battlefields, are involved. The Lower (small) Church is dedicated to the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Prince Vladimir, the Baptizer of Rus.
The four chapels of the Upper Church are named in honor of the patron saints of the branches of the armed forces: the Holy Great Martyr Barbara — the patroness of the Strategic Missile Forces and Artillery, the Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called — the patron saint of the Russian Navy, the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky — the defender of the Ground Forces, and the Holy Prophet Elijah — the Heavenly patron of the Aerospace and Airborne Forces of Russia.
From an architectural point of view, the temple is designed in a monumental Russian-Byzantine style, including modern approaches and a unique synthesis of sculpture, painting, ceramic and stained glass mosaics, and artistic casting for Orthodox architecture.
The structure is made of reinforced concrete structures covered with copper-coated panels. According to the authors, the greenish hue is intended to evoke associations with the Armed Forces. It is noteworthy that an alloy containing metal from captured weapons of the Nazi German army was used for the cast-iron slabs of the temple's porches. The floors of the temple are made of cast-iron alloy with melted-down remains of enemy heavy military equipment.
