Here we are introducing Skye the one year old Labrador puppy to the stop whistle (one single peep on the whistle). Our goal in stage one is to keep the dog with us at heel on the lead and pairing them sitting with the sound of the stop whistle.
Stage 1: Initially we ask the dog to sit, reinforce with good.
Stage 2: Continue walking with dog at heel and then stop, see if the dog offers you an automatic sit, if it does, mark with 'good'.
Stage 3: When this is 100% secure you can pair the sit with the stop whistle with your hand raised slightly, flat palm facing the dog. (Depending on how sensitive the dog is, you don't want to blow too loudly or raise your hand too high initially, build on this until your dog is confidently putting its bottom on the ground when you blow the stop whistle.)
Stage 4: Continue to walk the dog at heel, blow the stop whistle with your hand held up hight.
Stage 5: Raise the criteria by doing the same exercise off the lead.
