In this video, I'm going to teach you how to escape out of the first minor pentatonic position.

To develop your musical personality you need freedom, this means being able to move around the fretboard. The reason why you may be stuck in that first pentatonic position is because of the comfort factor. This comfort causes that your music becomes predictable.

As usual with our lessons, we are going to work over a backing track, in this case in the key of B minor.

Another reason why we are so comfortable on that first position minor pentatonic is that we tend to look for the root note on the sixth string.

The idea here is to start from another point on the fretboard while keeping the visual reference of the root on the first position minor pentatonic. Locating the root in other areas of the fretboard is going to allow us to build the scale in different strings and frets.

What really helps to memorize these scales is visualizing one note at the time. When we do that we force ourselves to not just follow a scale pattern but to add new notes into our musical ideas. This expands our melodic choices by adding new intervals to the mix.

A final tip I'm going to give you is to use what I call spacings. There are only two spacings possible on minor pentatonic scales: the distance of three frets or the distance of two frets. Knowing that there are only two possible distances allows you to move with more confidence horizontally across the fretboard. This also enables you to expand the pentatonic positions.

As usual with these types of tricks, it's all about the exploration game. Master your guitar fretboard, but do it with musicality and one note at a time.
