Today's video is a follow-up of a previous lesson about playing with modes.

On that video, I explained how modes are really scales with a specific flavor that is directed by the chord you are playing over. Today we are going to reverse the concept and talk about how to write something (a chord progression) that would fit a mode. We are going to answer the question: what does mean writing in Dorian, Lydian and so on.

For that, we are going to use Wise Guitar. Wise Guitar is a free app (currently in development) that lets you enter notes on a guitar fretboard and creates a simple backing track out of the chords you entered.

First, we have to choose a scale, in this case, we are going to use the Lydian mode. The fretboard will show you all the notes that are part of the Lydian scale. Next, we will randomly pick three notes out of the scale to form a chord. We will repeat the process to create a four-chord progression.

Our progression here is built on the D Lydian scale, that means that all the notes will be attracted to that root note to create the characteristic sound of the Lydian mode. If I play over the generated backing track all the notes will fit because the chords were built over that particular scale.

This is an exploration game and your ears need to be involved all the time. Don't rely on theory or finger memory alone, your ears are the ones that tell you what works and what does not work, musically. Modal playing is all about the particular colors of each scale and to discover those colors you have to be paying attention at all times.

Also, use the Wise app, although is still at the development stage and the sounds are not awesome yet; it's a super useful tool for developing your modal playing.
