The Beginning – Kindness of Lakho Seth
Lakho Seth was a rich and honored man who was a devoted servant of his Guru, Baba Salar Sidh.
The saint used to meditate and reside in a dhono (holy place) near a river. During the rainy season, the river would flood and disrupt the saint’s meditation process. In devotion to his Guru, Lakho Seth constructed a wall and made an alternative path for the river to flow so that his Guru’s meditation spot would not be disturbed.
Intrigued by his seva and devotion, Baba Salar Sidh blessed Lakho Seth with the strength of spirituality.
The Arising of Ego
As the years went by, Lakho Seth gradually built ego about the powers bestowed upon him by his Guru. Rather than being humble, he started testing the saints and devotees in the area.
He would spiritually challenge them – and if they did not pass his tests, they would be humiliated, imprisoned, or forced to leave their path of bhakti.
The blessing had turned into pride.
The Return of the Guru
After 12 years, during the holy event of Kumbh Mela, Baba Salar Sidh came back.
When Lakho Seth heard about the arrival of his Guru, he went to meet him – but with ego clouding his vision, he even attempted to test his own Guru.
According to the holy Guru-Shishya Parampara, a true Guru does not destroy his disciple, even if his disciple goes astray. Rather than punishing Lakho Seth, Baba Salar Sidh calmly led him towards another disciple:
Dharma Bai
The Guru said,
"If you think you are powerful, go and face Dharma Bai. She is more spiritually elevated than you. If you have courage, challenge her."
With arrogance in his heart, Lakho Seth boasted that he would conquer her and make her his servant.
And so begins the epic battle between ego and devotion.
