In this mini-documentary produced by filmmaker John Stanton for the Nantucket Historical Association, current ‘Sconset residents tell the story of the moving of Sankaty Lighthouse back from the ‘Sconset bluff to safe ground in 2007. It includes excerpts from a series of oral histories conducted by John Stanton for the NHA in 2019.
In this video, Bob Felch, former Executive Director of ‘Sconset Trust, was responsible for organizing the move and also for fundraising. He recalls that it took a village and how funds and other support not only came in from ‘Sconset residents, but from all of Nantucket, and throughout the country. Bob says, “There was nothing negative about it, nothing political about it. It was all good.” Photojournalist Rob Benchley, who lived on Baxter Road and could see the lighthouse from his home, was granted access throughout the move to document the historic event. The video features some of his photography from that time.
The 'Sconset Oral History Project was generously funded by the Judy Family Foundation.
