This was my first serious climbing walk that I tried after my Minoca type heart attack that occurred in the middle of last year which happened about two months prior to this climb. I wanted to try to see how well my heart was recovering. I did the Sutton Lake walk a few weeks earlier (see my video on that one) and felt good after it so I wanted to try something more challenging. In hindsight I probably should have waited a bit longer before tying a more challenging climbing walk like this one, but overall I did good, though not getting as far up the trail as I was wanting too, hence the “Part 1’ in the title. I don't like unfinished walks so I will get back up there later this New Zealand winter and finish this walk. I am doing much better now so should easily get all the way up next time!
The Lewis Pass Tops Route, or track, whatever you want to call it, is at, obviously Lewis Pass, which is one of the major road passes across the mountains between western and eastern areas of the South Island. The trail doesn't have a specific end, it eventually combines with other trails far along the top ridge and continues deep into the more remote areas of the mountains. My goal was to reach the small lakes that are up on the ridge which can be seen in the Google map imagery at the beginning of the video. I didn't make it to those little lakes this time, but will get there on the next attempt! The trail is fairly narrow most of the time indicating that it isn't that commonly used. Most visitors miss it as its a bit hidden across the road from the parking area that services more family friendly easier trails in the valley. It is a very good though rugged walk so good boots and experience with walking over lots of trees roots is needed. A trekking pole is very helpful here.
Oh, and you actually hear me talk in this one for the first time! Of course all the audio was recorded with the built in microphone on the GoPro so it isn't very good so I added subtitles so you can understand me over the wind noise and my lazy North American accent.
I still have one more video from last year to edit and release then I can get onto this years videos. I sure wish I had more time to do these videos more often...
I am making these videos to do something creative and help in getting me back out hiking again. Also with sharing these to the world, it’s for the enjoyment of other people who are unable to visit or physically do these walks themselves and for those who just want to see a different and scenic part of the world in a quiet (little talking) and relaxing manner.
