This is the fifth in a series of six web seminars that focus on the general architecture of the Next Generation Science Standards and the specific expectations for kindergarten through fifth grade. Ted Willard, NGSS@NSTA Program Director, offers an overview of the fourth-grade performance expectations and related dimensions. After this brief overview, Mary Starr, Executive Director, Michigan Mathematics and Science Centers Network; and Kathy Renfrew, K-5 Science Coordinator, VT Agency of Education explore disciplinary core ideas, using the example of energy, and how they apply to the fourth grade in terms of performance expectations and an approach to science and engineering practices. Kathy also brings a special guest with her, Tracy Lavallee, a Vermont teacher featured in the web seminar’s videos. Using two videos taken from Tracy’s fourth-grade classroom, they discuss lesson plan ideas and approaches, and then they answer participant questions and give advice.
