Summary
This webinar's objectives are:
To unpack the definition of disability and discuss the advantages and disadvantages in using a social rather than medical definition when surveying service providers
To provide context on abuse of people living with disabilities and known gaps in service
To identify key preliminary findings from the project study
To talk about next steps in the research process
To receive national input on issues encountered by abused women with disability.
Speakers
Angela Wisniewski, PhD
Angela Wisniewski, PhD Sociology, Assistant Professor, St. Thomas University. She researches and teaches in the area of gender, media, and technology. She is a research affiliate of the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre, where she has experience collaborating with community organizations and government on the issue of intimate partner violence in rural communities.
Rina Arseneault, C.M., MSW, RSW
Rina Arseneault, C.M., MSW, RSW, Associate Director, Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research since November 1993. She is recognized as an activist and educator on women issues. She has organized numerous training opportunities and workshops. Her experience includes extensive work with community - organizations, individual researchers, government agencies, the media and victims of violence. In 1997, Rina was honoured with the NB Advisory Council on the Status of Women Recognition Award and in 2014 appointed to the Order of Canada.
Larissa Rose, Maggie Newcombe, and Vanessa MacDonald
Larissa Rose, Maggie Newcombe, and Vanessa MacDonald are social work students at St. Thomas University doing their social action placement at the MMFC.
