This is a release technique I use with some patients to help with gluteal or posterior leg pain.
On occasion, this muscle can spasm, causing referred pain down the back of the leg. It can also compress the sciatic nerve in some instances, creating pain, tingling, or numbness down the back of the leg and into the foot.
When I find the tender spot, I place the ball there, and move my bodyweight onto the ball. If the pain is too much that I can't spend some time there without holding my breath, then I need to take some of my weight off. This release is meant to calm down the guarding and hypersensitivity, so we want to make sure that we can tolerate it.
I usually have my patients start with 3 - 5 minutes. If they can tolerate it, then I have them hold there until the tenderness subsides.
