Struggling with inconsistent assessment criteria across modules? This common issue can leave students confused and frustrated. Reflective writing, in particular, often suffers from unclear expectations. In this Roundtable, Steve Kirk demonstrates how the LCT concept of semantic gravity (or how meanings relate to their context) can help clarify reflective writing in sport and exercise sciences. Visualising the essential elements of writing as three heuristic levels of ‘concrete experience’, ‘generalisation’ and ‘theory’, students are enabled to distinguish between different kinds of reflective writing, turning their personal logs into more powerful reflective statements for assessment. This approach not only demystifies reflective writing but also enables students to make connections to other assessments, such as essays, presentations and interviews.
