Reflecting on experiences is becoming widely used in assessments across the disciplinary maps, especially in professional fields. For example, in teacher training, pre-service teachers are often asked to ‘present and jointly reflect’ on their classroom experiences. The assumption is that sharing experiences will improve their own and others’ future practices. However, this often does not happen. Discussion may remain anecdotal and personal, failing to connect properly to the theories being learned in coursework that can help make sense of experiences and translate those experiences into professional knowledge that will support mindful strategies in future.
In this Roundtable, we share critical field incidents reported and discussed by English as a Foreign Language pre-service teachers and the way in which their peers responded to these recounts of incidents. We examine the student comments using Semantics and specifically the notion of ’semantic pathways’ around the plane (movements between semantic codes). We identify a number of semantic pathways, some of which facilitated joint knowledge construction, while others did not. We discuss which semantic pathways might enhance, support, or inhibit joint knowledge construction.
