Paint Snowdrops with Masking Fluid | Watercolor Technique

Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) are for many of us the most beautiful signal that winter is retreating and spring is on its way. These delicate little white flowers with soft green markings on their petals grow in forests and groves, pushing through the brown earth long before the first green grass appears.

In this painting, I captured a dense carpet of snowdrops spread beneath bare trees — their grey branches against a blue sky suggest that spring has arrived, yet winter hasn't quite let go.

🎨 Technique & Process:

For this painting I used masking fluid — I first covered the white petals of the snowdrops to keep them clean and untouched while applying the surrounding colours. The background was painted in loose neutral tones, the ground in warm earthy shades, and finally I removed the masking and refined the flowers in detail.

Snowdrops bloom among the very first flowers of the year — sometimes still in the snow — and that is exactly why they symbolise resilience, purity and the promise of a new beginning. We simply love them!
