I love peacocks. Every time we visit the park, I hope to see one. They carry both pride and calm. Once, we were very lucky. A peacock stopped in front of us and slowly opened his full tail. It was a quiet but powerful moment. I just stood there and watched. You can see this moment at the start and at the end of the video. I wanted to keep that memory alive. So I brought it into this watercolor bird painting.

In this realistic watercolor bird painting, I chose a close side profile of the peacock’s head. He is turned to the right. The eye is the main focus. Dark, glossy, surrounded by a pale shape and deep blue marks. The beak is light grey, gently curved, with a soft shadow under the top part. The long neck moves from deep ultramarine into rich blue with hints of turquoise.

Before painting, I covered the white areas around the eye and on the head with masking fluid. This let me work more freely and not worry about losing the highlights. When I removed the dry masking, clean bright spots appeared again. They give the eye its spark and form.

I built the head and neck with layering. First, I used a wet on wet technique so the colors could blend in a natural way. Later, I added darker glazes to deepen the shadows under the beak and along the lower neck. This layering with watercolor helps create depth without harsh lines.

The background is light green with soft spots and blooms. I used plenty of water and let the paint flow across the paper. It formed loose shapes that feel like grass and light in a park. In some areas, I dropped clean water into the wash to create soft transitions. The background stays blurred so the peacock stands out as the main subject. The strong blue against the gentle green leads your eye straight to his gaze.

The watercolor paper has a subtle texture. You can see it in the lighter parts of the neck, where the pigment settled in small irregular patterns. It creates a natural feather effect. I might have used more water and let the paint move on its own. Parts of the background have stronger blooms that pull a little attention away from the head. Next time, I will watch the balance between detail and freedom more carefully.

Still, I am happy with this watercolor painting for beginners and beyond. It reminds me of that quiet day in the park. The moment when the peacock opened his tail and everything went still. Even though I painted only his head, the whole memory lives inside it. Watercolor lets me capture softness and strength at once. And that is exactly what I hoped for.
