This 1940s black-and-white silent home movie shows several 18th and 19th century California missions established by Franciscan priests in an effort to spread Christianity. Many of the missions are rundown or in ruins. The film begins with the Mission San Diego de Alcala (0:15), founded in 1769 by Fra. Junipero Serra. A closeup of the Mission bell tower (0:49) and courtyard. Mission San Luis Ray, founded 1798 in Oceanside, California (2:16). Shots of a fountain (2:41) and various statues (3:10). Quadrangle ruins (3:49). Mission San Juan Capistrano (4:28), founded in 1776. A seal engraved on the floor with the Mission’s name (4:41). Pigeons in the gardens, and a fountain (4:50). Statue of Saint Junipero Serra (5:56). Ruins of the Great Stone Church wall (6:08) from 1796. “Resurgam” inscription with a cross (6:55). Sign for Mission Santa Ynez, El Camino Real, founded September 17, 1804 (7:12) by the Auto Club of So. Cal. The sign also lists Mission Santa Barbara and Mission San Luis Obispo. La Purisima Mission, established December 8, 1787 by Father Lasuen, and damaged in an 1812 earthquake (7:47). It is the only example of a complete California mission.
