What you hear Rafael play is very much what you would expect in Carnival OF Venice, on which tune this is based. The intro and ending are handled in harmony by the trumpet section, but Rafael plays a wonderful set of variations in the middle.
Most brass players are familiar with the solo recordings of Raphael Mendez, but his orchestra did many recordings with popular vocalist. Often, Mendez would be featured either in counter melodic phrases or during introductions and interludes. Recordings like this remind me that there is still no one who can play like him!
