Parentification refers to the process in which a child assumes the role of a parent or caregiver to their siblings or even to their own parent. This can occur when a parent is emotionally or physically unavailable, and the child must step in to take care of the household, younger siblings, or even the parent themselves. Parentification can lead to the child missing out on their own childhood and developmental needs, as well as causing them to feel overwhelmed, stressed, and anxious.
Adultification, on the other hand, refers to the process in which a child is expected to behave and function as an adult, even though they are still a child. This can occur when parents or caregivers fail to provide age-appropriate guidance and support, and instead expect the child to act as a mature and responsible adult. Adultification can lead to the child missing out on their own childhood experiences and feeling burdened with adult responsibilities that they are not yet ready to handle.
