Descriptive praise can a powerful tool for a parent to encourage good behavior. By providing attention to your child when they are behaving, it increases the chances of that behavior happening again.
Descriptive praise means being specific about the good behaviors or actions of your child, according to therapists with Triple P (the Positive Parenting Program). That means saying things like, "Thank you for picking up your toys" or "Thank you for sharing your toys with your little brother." It's better to be specific than offer just general approval like "Good job."
Therapists Robert Lerro and Amelia Baena are part of a team of Triple P therapists with Community Partners of South Florida. Triple P is a FREE program offered in Palm Beach County and funded by Children's Services Council of Palm Beach County. Triple P offers parenting strategies to cope with common childhood behaviors with one-on-one sessions and group sessions. Triple P is available for parents raising children up to age 12. For parents raising teenagers, there is Teen Triple P.
