RECENT ROCKFALLS INSIDE A WW11 GERMAN TUNNEL IN THE ISLAND OF ALDERNEY

When I recently visited the German tunnel under Essex Castle in Alderney - I have visited it many times over the years - I was not prepared for what I encountered inside! There are now a number of medium to large cracks in the roof of the sandstone rock in the area of the main fault line, which is located some 40 metres from the other smaller partially blocked southern entrance.
These cracks are fairly substantial and would be fatal if anyone was in the wrong place at the wrong time. There should be a warning sign erected at the entrance warning of the danger.
The air quality was not good at all, with a lot of minute dust-type material floating around. At one point, I switched camera to my head torch so you can see what I was talking about! Anyone deciding to visit this tunnel should wear a mask, and be aware of the possibility of falling rocks. unfortunately, on this occasion I forgot my mask … not very pleasant.
