Seriously if you guys want any further details about any of the subjects I gloss over let me know and I'll put together a more detailed historical picture.
I was right the shrine I mention kinda. It's on the Island of Miejima, but is technically called Itsukushima Jingu. It's a beautiful place. Here's a decent random video I found about it • Hiroshima In A Day: Miyajima | Japan Trave...
It's also right outside of Hiroshima so it's an incredibly beautiful area. that being said the Hiroshima peace museum has gone through some changes that make it less historical and more political lately. I prefer the museum in Nagasaki, which I truly believe is an iconic emblem of peace.
I mention puppet theatre that inspired the movements used for dramaticism in kabuki. It's called Bunraku if i remember correctly.
In case you didn't know I fail to mention that tanuki means racoon, but generally refers to an extremely mischievous racoon.
Also I understand most Japanese, but can't really speak it. I lived there for a little while and took courses in college but not enough to ever feel fluent.
EDIT* post video
I was pleasantly surprised to see how extremely wrong i was about facial hair.
You are correct they are exceedingly common, somehow in my time working with their armor i only remembered encountering sets un-mustached. I probably just didn't take it as a significant detail in memory for whatever reason.
However something should be noted. The heavier face-plate mengu were ceremonial in nature and proved repeatedly to be ineffective in battle because of how they restricted breathing (the mustache ones particularly so) and thus they were formally part of the ceremonial outfit but seldom worn into battle. Im completely fine with them now tho in the game because as you said there is a historical precedent.
Whats interesting tho is what i said about the Ainu is true. Japanese at points in historical time had very interesting changing opinions of facial hair. Genji era definitely didn't like facial hair. But 1300s on definitely did based on the fact that some rulers even wore fake mustaches because they were incapable of growing one (see hideyoshi mustache). Yet this whole time they also did in fact call the ainu something similar to hairy barbarians and had disdain for people that were more or overly hairy.
