Sumo Discussion, Kami, and the Mawashi (belt) 16:00 Disclaimer Sumo may not currently wear the rope belts and Shide during the fight as I discuss in the video actively, but I from my studies believe the style of the mawashi today with its dangling cloth and large knot comes from this, and the belts with the Shide are featured and seen in art forms depicting Sumo. And they certainly wear them ritualistically before the fight commences and they are stripped to just the mawashi.

I've been struggling to remember the name of the piece I reference concerning the "corporate hell" in the early portion of the video, As soon as I can figure it out again, and dig up some of my old writings that used it I'll post about it here.
FOUND IT it's "Rootless Weeds" or "Rootless Grass" depending on the translator by Hiraga Gennai. One of my absolute favorite pieces of satire.

Gonna ask again, I debated and then decided against it, Should I have some light music in the background for these? If so what type? Video game remixes from OC Remix would be fun to feature and don't have copyright issue, but probably don't match the theme. I could try to find some un-copyrighted traditional Japanese music. Anyways soliciting thoughts on the idea.

Do note the connection I see between omikuji (prayer papers) and Shide (the papers used in shinto purification ceremonies is not necessarily completely accurate, but is something that I personally thinks makes sense regarding their origins. I was wrong tho that prayers are written on the Shide, rather the ones with those particular folds are usually left blank, however they are hung from the same trees and with the same reverential manner and purpose that I described in the video. Other connections link the Shide's origin all the way back to early japan's creation myth as they marked the cave that amaterasu once hid in. However I personally find it unlikely that they adorned the cave in the same pattern and style for a variety of different reasons that would take too long to explain. Regardless the practice of tying them to holy things has persisted for a very long time and they are a symbol of purification and purpose. They can also be called Gohei.

The rope belts I talk about seen on many of the samurai also go by different names for different purposes, but almost all are intended to demarcate the sacred spiritual world from the profane material world, or in essence set something apart as holy or sacred. One such word for them as featured on gateways prominently is shimenawa. Scholars again disagree about where these ropes came from, but they are connected to ancient stories of both Amaterasu and Susanoo, and to other stories later.

I had to cut a lot from this video after my first two recording attempts. I like to talk in detail about this stuff, but it just takes too long. If you would like to see me dedicate more time to the historical side do let me know cause I would be passionate about doing so, but don't want to spend the time if no one was interested.
