The Great Western Main Line is arguably the oldest high-speed railway in the world, built in 1838 to high-speed rail standards even though high-speed trains wouldn't be developed for another 100 years. Finally in 1976, the Intercity 125 diesel trains were introduced, allowing the line to operate at its 125 mph (201 km/h) design speed.
