And while he was arguing with FIDE and laying down his own terms to tournament organizers, Petrosian and Spassky were becoming world champions. It seems Fischer was simply wasting his best years on politics. And finally, Fischer decided the time had come. And in the 1970-71 qualifying cycle, he began a decisive assault on the chess Olympus.
