Non-profit publishing platforms and services rely on interdependent systems, metadata, and standards to support discovery, preservation, accessibility, and more. Yet, the long-term sustainability of any infrastructure is not guaranteed. With financial pressures, consolidation, and increased demands for openness and compliance, how are we collectively supporting these foundations of mission-driven publishing?
In this session, leaders working on the front lines of community-supported infrastructure explore the current state and future directions. Panelists will highlight sustainability models for real-world efforts to reflect on:
What community-supported infrastructure exists today: from open usage data services and hosting platforms to cooperative metadata and discovery frameworks?
How these infrastructures are funded, governed, and maintained, with a focus on collaboration, transparency, and strategic alignment?
Where do gaps and stress points lie, e.g. technical fragmentation, underfunded service areas, and the need for equitable participation?
How we define meaningful “community support” beyond transactional engagement and what it takes to build resilience together?
Can our community simultaneously innovate new services and ensure reliable operations for today's critical infrastructures given current research and education funding realities?
Audience participation is welcomed in this collective conversation about values, investment, and shared responsibility.
