Two very important concepts I always have to show my TOEFL prep students are 1)the difference between Content words and Function words, and 2) Thought Chunking or grouping words into units. I also have to explain how to highlight and give Content words V.I.P. treatment as if they are the main character on a stage with a spotlight pointed at them so that the entire audience knows where to direct their attention.
Many exam prep students focus on using templates and fixing their grammar and expanding their academic vocabulary range, which are both important criteria that are assessed in the speaking section, but in order to achieve high scores, the delivery aspect must also be considered. In my opinion, intonation patterns, pacing, and vowel lengthening are essential for creating the recognizable sound patterns of spoken English.
When I hear equal-length syllables with no grouping, no pausing, and no pitch variations, it sounds robotic, monotone, and emotionless. It's as if a vibrant impressionistic painting with rich pastel colors and textures was reduced to a boring black-and-white grayscale copy. It lacks so much potential and is basically the equivalent of text on a piece of paper.
However, people are not just words on paper or text on a screen. We have pitch, volume, and length to enhance our words, and give them expressiveness and meaning through our inflections and stress. Don't ignore the delivery aspect of your speaking.
Follow along with this video, repeat after me, and try shadowing the words you see on the scren. That means read and speak out loud at the same time you hear me speak. This kind of exercise can greatly improve your speaking.
