The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the most important Catholic church in the world – yes, even more important than the Vatican.
Officially called “Mother and Head of All Churches” (Latin: Omnium Ecclesiarum Urbi et Orbi Mater et Caput), it serves as the cathedral of the Pope in his role as the Bishop of Rome.
It is one of the four major papal basilicas and the oldest Christian church in the Eternal City — founded in the 4th century under Emperor Constantine the Great.
