Puerperium: Obstetrics Hindi Lecture Series -
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The puerperium is the period immediately following childbirth, lasting approximately 6 weeks, during which the mother’s body undergoes physiological changes to return to its pre-pregnant state 🤱. Key changes include uterine involution, where the uterus contracts and shrinks back to its normal size, and the cessation of lochia (vaginal discharge), which progresses from rubra (red) to serosa (pink) and finally alba (white) over weeks. Hormonal adjustments occur as levels of hCG, progesterone, and estrogen decline, leading to the resumption of ovarian function, especially in non-lactating mothers. Lactating mothers experience prolactin surge, promoting breastfeeding 🍼. During this period, the mother is at risk of complications like postpartum hemorrhage, infections (puerperal sepsis), or thromboembolism. Emotional changes, including postpartum blues or postpartum depression, are also common. Monitoring during this phase includes assessing uterine involution, bleeding, and emotional well-being. Proper nutrition, rest, and medical follow-up are essential for recovery and successful lactation. Early identification of complications ensures a healthy postpartum period for both mother and baby. 🌿✨🩺
